Many translators today experience a growing sense of uncertainty about the future of their profession. Projects disappear, clients experiment with automated solutions, and the public conversation about artificial intelligence often sounds like a countdown to the end of human translation.

By now, it has almost become a cliché to say that AI is transforming our profession. Yet behind the headlines and the anxiety they generate, the reality is more complex—and often more interesting.

This two-hour interactive workshop aims to take a step back from the daily noise and look at these developments with a broader perspective. Drawing on insights from the translation industry, economic research on technological change, and experiences from other professions that have faced similar transformations, the session will explore what these changes really mean for translators.

The workshop will focus on practical questions: How can translators adapt to the evolving market? Which aspects of the profession are changing the most? Where does the real value of human expertise lie today? And how can language professionals position themselves to remain relevant in the years ahead?

Rather than a technical presentation, this session will be a constructive and forward-looking conversation. Participants will be invited to share their own experiences and concerns, reflect together on the current situation, and explore possible paths for the future of the profession. The goal is not to deny the challenges, but to approach them with clarity, realism and confidence.

The workshop will also provide a European perspective on the evolution of the translation profession. Europe has long been shaped by multilingual institutions and strong translation traditions, offering valuable insights into how linguistic professions can adapt to technological change while maintaining high professional standards.

The session will conclude with an open discussion and a Q&A, allowing participants to raise their own questions about the future of translation and their place in it.
